The front sprocket coincides with the swingarm pivot. This completely eliminates the need to adjust the chain as it now has constant tension transferring power to the ground.
With the swingarm pivoting through the front sprocket and the engine being moved back in the frame for better weight distribution BMW have now been able to make a longer swingarm offering better traction. These changes have also allowed space to angle the barrel forwards 30 degrees allowing much straighter inlet tracts for the bikes Keihin fuel injection system.
The bikes clutch is attached to the end of the crankshaft where it spins at engine speed and thus doesn’t have the same amount of torque feeding through it as traditional geared design.
BMW have built a much smaller clutch which now sits forward of the output shaft – thereby allowing the swingarm axle enough room to pivot in the rear of the engine. This is why the rear break pedal can avoid the S-shaped design of traditional dirtbikes since it doesn’t have to fold around the clutch housing.
The airfilter is located up behind the headstock, as far away from mud and water as possible and inside a clever slide out drawer for easy access.
The 8 litre fuel tank is situated under the seat for better central mass weight distribution with the filler cap/bung located in the rear of the seat.
Tapered Magura handlebar and levers are top-shelf components.
This bike is also equipped with a single piece radiator and a built in fan that comes on at low revs.
For suspension BMW turned to industry leader Ohlins and for brakes they fitted Brembo front and rear.
The bikes electric starter button automatically activates a decompression function that works through centrifugal force to reduce the power needed to start the engine, thus preserving battery power and extending starter life.
The G450X is one of the lightest bikes around with good ground clearance ideal for getting over those rock steps or fallen trees. If you are tired of the usual suspects and you are looking for something different with new design and a quality build then this may just be the bike for you. |
